MGT 586: International Business Law Group Project

Assignment

MGT 586: GROUP PROJECT

Summer 2017

Content

The group project is the development of a business plan in PPT and paper format for entry into a foreign market using the method of foreign direct investment (FDI).  You are familiar with business plans and likely have developed more than one in your MBA courses.  The focus in MGT 586 is foreign penetration, focusing on legal aspects.  Thus, when you address advertising, you will address market demographics only to the extent the laws affect that particular market.  For example, if you identify your advertising audience as children, there are greater restrictions on advertising to a child audience in many countries. There may also be restrictions on the use of children, dogs, etc. in advertising in some countries. When you address sale or purchase of property, the foreign country may require a more-than-fifty percent ownership of property.  You must research and address every issue related to FDI in the country you choose.

The project will take quite a bit of research, so I encourage you to start early. As resources, you must cite each relevant chapter of the text, as well as outside sources in each section of the plan.  At least 20 slides are required for each PPT, and 20 pages for the paper, Times New Roman, double-spaced (only one double space between paragraphs), 1” margins all around, with inline citations in the paper only.

PPT 1

The first PPT will:

  • describe your physical product (do not offer a service unless in conjunction with the product), and list the U.S. and foreign resources and the services they provide to help you launch your entry

  • identify your country of choice, giving the marketing and legal reasons

  • address the issues involved in FDI in that country.

As you are sophisticated graduate students, you will not be given a list of topics to cover.  Treat the assignment as one from your employer who knows nothing about doing business abroad.  A large part of your grade for PPT 1 will be the comprehensiveness of your list of issues.

Some tips:

  • use the UM library source developed specifically for this course at http://libguides.umflint.edu/INB586

  • review the PPT from Richard Corson in BB: Course Documents

  • access the CIA World Factbook which has a wealth of information on each country in the world.https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/

  • look at other sources, such as the Transparency International website regarding bribery by country - look at data from previous years to determine if the country that interests you is improving or declining. Be careful not to treat bribes as part of the cost of doing business, as most are illegal for US companies doing business abroad (Chapter 16).

  • do not limit yourself to the above resources, as there are other considerations, such as logistics costs for the distance you might have to transport raw materials, availability of partners (required in some countries for property ownership and business operations), currency exchange problems, etc.

  • Need help writing your paper?   For a brief reminder of research paper structure, help understanding plagarism or citation help, try the library resource for Help with Your Paper (etc).

    • See:   Thompson Library website, "subject guides."

PPT 2

In the second PPT, you will present the balance of the plan.  Let the text be your guide on what you need to address, including chapters that are not on the exam.  If you need advice, you can collect your questions and make one call to the Export Assistance Center (see Corson PPT for contact info).  Do not ask for Richard Corson himself - you can get the information from a staff person (and use that person as a cited source in your paper).

Make your PPTs appealing.  In the PPTs, do not cut and paste full sentences from sources.  In fact, do not use full sentences.  A PPT is an outline for you to follow as you speak.  Bullets are the easiest to view.  Add no inline citations to the PPTs, only to the paper.
