Dr. Christian Vannier

Avoiding Plagiarism Webinars

The library offers Avoiding Plagiarism webinars during the Fall and Winter semesters. Please register for one of the upcoming sessions below for Fall 2024:

If your instructor is using Canvas for their online classroom, they may have added the Library's Avoiding Plagiarism module already.

Avoiding Plagiarism Certificate Course

If you are unable to attend a live webinar, the self-paced certificate course is another option. Hosted through the UM-Flint Professional Development storefront, you will need to enroll, then watch the lecture videos and complete the review quiz in order to earn the certificate. There is no cost to enroll in this course and the certificate expires after 18 months.

To enroll:

  1. Click the enroll button on the course’s page, then click enroll again in your cart.
  2. The enrollment will be pending for a few minutes, but the screen will eventually say “ready to begin.”
  3. The course can then be accessed in your Canvas Dashboard.

After you complete the course, you should receive a certificate from Canvas by email. If you do not receive it by email you are able to log back into professional development catalog and download it from the Completed Course list in your Student Dashboard. You can access your dashboard by clicking on your name next to the cart icon in the upper right corner.

Academic Policies

Accurately citing sources used for research is an important part of the writing and research process. Citation is important because:

  • It is used to give credit for information originally written elsewhere.
  • Citation enables others to find the same information again.
  • Failure to give credit for drawing on the work of others constitutes plagiarism.

For more information on plagiarism, please read the Academic Policies of the University and the English Department's policy on Academic Integrity.
