Borrowing and Returning Materials

To help reduce the spread of COVID-19, most of our stacks are closed to browsing. Please use the Library Catalog to request books from the UM-Flint collection. Many of our books are also available digitally through the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service. For help accessing and requesting books, please ask a librarian.

We have reconfigured the circulation desk to allow for contactless self check-out procedures. Plexiglass barriers have been installed at service points, and we ask that you respect those barriers by not reaching around them.

Books can be returned to the circulation desk drop slots, or without coming into the library at the blue dropbox outside the ground floor main entrance.

Returned books will be quarantined for 4 days after they are checked in but before they are shelved or loaned to the next patron. This quarantine period is enough time for the virus to be undetectable on surfaces, per the REALM project

Course Reserves have been converted to electronic versions whenever possible, however a few books remain on reserve. Many have a 3 day loan period and will be quarantined for 4 days after return. Those items that are designated for 2 or 4 hours loans in the library will have their covers wiped down and quarantined as long as possible.

Limited technology lending is available. Laptops can be borrowed for in-library use only and will be sanitized between uses. Laptops have built-in webcams. We have added headsets with microphones that students can check out with a regular loan period and take home. Headsets have a USB connector.

Anatomical models are not being loaned since we cannot effectively sanitize them between uses.

*New* Curbside Pickup

Please use this form to request curbside pick up for up to 10 physical books and/or media items from the UM-Flint collection.

  • Please check the Library Catalog for available items and submit a Get This request if that option is available.
  • Browsing collection books and some reserve and tech items are available for curbside pick up, though they can't be requested through the Catalog.
  • Items requested from the UM-Ann Arbor libraries can be picked up through Flint curbside.
  • Interlibrary loan items can be picked up through Curbside.

Once you have submitted your request, circulation staff will email you when your items are available for pick up with instructions on how to pick them up.

Curbside pick up is available from 1 - 5pm Monday - Friday in the Thompson Library's loading dock off of Harrison Street, opposite of the University Pavilion parking ramp's entrance.

If you need help locating items through the Library Catalog, please contact a reference librarian.

Reserve Study Spaces in Advance

*New* Study rooms, computer stations, and individual seats must be reserved before use. This can be done from anywhere, up to 3 weeks in advance or upon arrival in the library. You can easily check in and out of the space from your smartphone using the QR code found on each seat. This new system allows us to ensure social distancing and safe capacity in the library, as well as assist in any contact tracing efforts.

Study room capacity is limited to 1-2 people. Study rooms must be reserved in advance.

ITS lab computers are available on all 3 floors of the library. Computers must be reserved before use.

Seating capacity in the library has been reduced to allow for social distancing. Because the furniture is carefully spaced to accommodate social distancing, please do not move furniture during your visit.

Whiteboards and markers are still available for students to use. Please ask for markers at the circulation desk and when you are done, return them for sanitizing.
