Did you know the Big Ten is not just about sports? The Big Ten Academic Alliance, has been around since 1958 and is a series of agreements and programs to collectively support the research at its member institutions. A significant portion of those programs are targeted at library collections, from HathiTrust and the Google Book project to retention agreements that support the collaborative preservation and storage of academic journals.
The most recent development in is a more streamlined sharing policy through interlibrary loan. Traditionally each institution set its own borrowing terms, meaning books requested from the University of Minnesota could have a wildly different loan period than books coming from Penn State. No more!
Starting this winter, students, staff, and faculty requesting physical materials through interlibrary loan that are fulfilled by a Big Ten institutions will be guaranteed a 17-week loan with a 17-week renewal. Our colleagues working in interlibrary loan will prioritize looking for copies held in Big Ten collections so that the majority of requests are fulfilled this way. Say goodbye to returning textbooks before the semester is over!
