In recent years the federal government has been moving to increase the accessibility of data and other materials related to research that is funded with federal money. One such plan is laid out in the OSTP Memo (Office of Science and Technology Policy), which was released in 2022. This memo recommends that all federal agencies put new policies into place by 2025 in order to make federally funded research freely available with no embargo . The goal of these changes are to make access to this research more accessible to the public. With all this in mind, data management planning for the whole lifecycle of your project is essential. It’s more important than ever to plan for how to organize and store your research data.

When deciding where to store your data, there are many options and it can be overwhelming. As a member of the University of Michigan system, you have the option of depositing your materials in the Deep Blue Repositories, the digital repositories for the University of Michigan. Deep Blue has two collections:

These repositories are open to current students, faculty, and staff. Depositing in Deep Blue Documents is a self-guided process. You login, follow the prompts, and fill in the requested information on a form that will populate the descriptions to make your research findeable. Each College/School at UM-Flint has a collection set up in which affiliated faculty, students, or staff may deposit their materials.

Deep Blue Data deposits require mediated service in order to get all the data formatted and appropriate descriptions assigned. The staff at Deep Blue will work with you to get your datasets properly documented and cleaned prior to uploading. They are also available to consult with you on data management planning.

Deep Blue is a terrific way to store and disseminate research as each item is assigned a DOI upon deposit. This is particularly helpful for easily sharing supplemental materials with journals or linking to documents on your CV. Deep Blue also gives your work more visibility as its contents show up in Google searches. Depositing your materials in Deep Blue is also an easy way to preserve your academic legacy by ensuring your academic output is being maintained and made available to the public.
