On Display: Staff Picks

by Zia Davidian on 2020-05-18T16:31:00-04:00 in Film, Fun Reading, On Display, Popular Culture | 0 Comments

Traditionally, we've done a display of staff picks every May. This time around, we're highlighting some of our favorites that are available from the library as e-books or audiobooks, and paired with a streaming movie or TV. We'll be updating periodically over the next couple weeks with more recommendations. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Born a Crime : Stories from a South African Childhood / Trevor Noah (e-book)

  • If you liked this, check out Son of Patricia on Netflix, one of Trevor Noah's many standup specials!

The Best American Food Writing 2019 / Samin Nosrat and Silvia Killingsworth (e-book)

  • If you like beautiful culinary storytelling, try Salt Fat Acid Heat on Netflix. It's hosted by Samin Nosrat, one of the editors of the book above!

Cold War (Amazon Prime) was nominated for best Director, best Foreign Language Film, and best Cinematography but lost out to Roma on all three. Part of the premise of Cold War is musicians in the late 40's early 50's traveling rural Poland recording folk music so that they can adapt the songs for a state sponsored folk music ensemble. Our former archivist Paul Gifford was an ethnomusicologist and traveled all over Eastern Europe during the Cold War. The University of Wisconsin library has the field recordings digitized, and Paul Gifford is quoted in this book that we have (in print only) Folksongs of Another America: Field Recordings from the Upper Midwest 1937-1946.  Our Music Online: Contemporary World Music database has an album by Mazowsze (the inspiration for the folk music troupe in the film) called Poland: My Beloved Country. Track two, Dwa Serduszka, is the song that features heavily in the film.

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (Amazon Prime) was written and directed by Paul Schrader (from Grand Rapids, wrote Taxi Driver) but is in Japanese and is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. The score is by Philip Glass and is an amazing piece of art by itself.

My daughter and I have been watching Nailed It! and Zumbo's Just Desserts on Netflix. They're no Great British Baking Show but scratch the itch of competitive food programs.

If you want to read, but can't seem to focus on a full length novel, try collections of short stories or shorter writing. The Best American Series collects fiction, comics, essays, and other nonfiction writing by genre or theme every year.
