Over the summer we welcomed two new staff members to the Thompson Library team. Let us introduce you to Laura Peet our new administrative assistant and Cameron Whalen our new circulation and archives clerk.

white woman with blonde hair and glassesLaura Peet is the new Administrative Assistant Senior for the library. She comes to the library from the dentistry field; after earning her degree from Mott Community College and initially working as a dental assistant, she worked her way up to managing a dental office. She is a life-long Michigander and currently lives outside of Lapeer.

What are you most excited about coming to UM-Flint?
Being part of something bigger; I’m excited to learn about higher education, and for goodness sakes, it’s U of M. It’s also a total new adventure to switch fields and a fun opportunity to learn something new.

What are you most looking forward to about working in a library?
Everything I’ve learned about the library so far has been really interesting. I didn’t realize there was so much involved. I’m looking forward to supporting the librarians, and adapting my skills to a new environment.

Any favorite hobbies or pastimes you’d like to share?
I love to scrapbook and cycle, and I enjoy the occasional wine tasting.

What are your favorite genres to read or watch?
I like a good “Hallmark movie” romance or psychological thriller. I’m currently reading Broadway Butterfly by Sara DiVello.

Cameron Whalen: white woman with long light brown hair and glassesCameron Whalen returns to the library as our new Information Resources Assistant who will split time between the circulation desk and the Genesee Historical Collections Center. She is an alum of UM-Flint (B.A. in English) and had worked in the library as a student circulation assistant. Cameron was born and raised in Davison, where she continues to live.

What are you most excited about coming back to UM-Flint?
Returning to a work environment I enjoy, as well as being in and around people that I already know. It's comforting to me.

What are you most looking forward to about working in the library?
It probably sounds weird, but decorating my desk. I'm also excited about having a full time permanent position and some stability. It feels different than past jobs, definitely more secure.

Any favorite hobbies or interests you'd like to share?
I love traveling and am interested in visiting as many countries as I can; maybe not every continent, but a majority of them. I also practice Tang soo do, a Korean style of martial arts, and am an avid scrapbooker.

What are your favorite genres to read or watch?
For books, definitely dystopian novels and dark horror and sci-fi. I love David Foster Wallace for his dark sense of humor. I like to watch dramas and independent movies.

Welcome to the University, Laura and Cameron!
