Jennifer Dean

If you’re like me, you’ve had lots of wonderful people asking you, “How’s your summer going?” And, if you are indeed like me, your first thought is, “Wait, did summer start?” followed closely by, “Oh, is it almost over?” Time is always flying, and soon it will be time to usher in a new academic year and welcome faces new and old. We can’t wait! Your library and archives team has spent the summer reviewing our vision, mission, and identity, and we’ve set a number of goals for ourselves to ensure that we can keep growing as a community of information professionals to meet our community’s needs: those of our students, faculty, and staff, first and foremost. We have a full roster of activities for the next year, including

  • increased training for our amazing student employees and front desk team, offering targeted research support in a variety of modalities,
  • increasing our outreach and communication efforts,
  • developing our understanding of AI and sharing our knowledge with you,
  • continuing to provide access to a world-class collection of information resources in a variety of formats, and
  • improving our student-centered spaces.

We will do this by working together as a library and archives team in large and small groups, reaching out to you for your feedback, and setting SMART goals - goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. We’ll keep you posted on our progress throughout the year…and we hope you’ll see the results of our work in everything we do.

Feedback from students, faculty, and staff are essential for us to do our best work. The 2023-2024 academic year was a busy year, with many visitors including UM-Flint students as well as members of the community. Welcoming our Flint and Genesee community is a core tenet of our services - we are proud to be part of this community, and opening our doors to everyone is part of our public university mission.

At the same time, we know that our students are our first priority, and when we hear from our students, we listen. Students let us know that they were looking for student-focused time and services in the library. As we discussed this feedback from our students, we decided to reserve some hours specifically for students, faculty, and staff, requiring a valid MCard to enter the library. We began reserving morning hours for students, faculty, and staff in mid-July. In the fall, we will add evening hours back to our mix of open hours, and these evening hours will also be reserved for students, faculty, and staff. We’ll continue to evaluate this policy, and we hope you’ll continue to give us your feedback.

The library building's regular Fall 2024 hours will be open Monday - Thursday 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the following access.

  • 9 a.m. to Noon: open to UM-Flint Students, Faculty, and Staff with an M-Card swipe
  • Noon - 5 pm: open to the general public
  • 5 - 10 pm: open to UM-Flint Students, Faculty, and Staff with an M-Card swipe
