Researching buildings relies on city directories and the Sanborn Digital Maps. The latter, dating from 1886 to 1928, are very detailed, but, except for the 1928 map, which covered the entire city, most cover only the downtown commercial section of Flint.

Sanborn maps, large-scale plans of a city or town, were created to assist fire insurance companies assess the risk associated with insuring a particular property. This collection includes 660,000 maps of more than 12,000 American towns and cities.
The Gerald Healy papers in the GHCC include files on various properties that Healy sold, as well as photographs.
The Sloan Museum has many photographs, and perhaps the largest collection of historic Flint photographs is the Crooks Collection at the Kettering University Archives.
